Why live off the grid
If you're serious about living off the grid you have probably looked into buying solar panels or wind generators. The problem is that it's just too expensive to buy enough solar panels or a big enough wind generator without breaking the bank. Wrong! You can build your own. The great part about this is that you can save a lot of money by installing and wiring the solar panels yourself. Trust me, once you've been shown how to do it the rest is easy... it's getting someone who can explain it without using rocket scientist lingo. I have been watching my brother and his family for years living off the grid. Finally, I asked for some help from his son when he visited me. I have enough power to my home just from one small wind powered unit to run all my exterior lighting ALL NIGHT LONG. I installed separate lighting in the house for simple night lights. They are installed on a timer and every night at 10:30, our house receives a light boost. We have even learned to shut off other lights in the house. If you didn't know it, you would think that we left the lights on in the bathrooms all night long. But really, all we did was add a light system to each of our two bathrooms so that once the timer kicks in, both of our bathrooms are very well lit. This will save us alot of money. And we did it all for: Wind mill: $145
House wiring: $47
Outlets for lights: $82
Light bulbs: $4
Hours to build and install: 14 total
Total cost: $278 Now, time is money but when you do it yourself and are saving yourself the money I will save, it is worth the time. I will try to update this over the coming months to see how much my average hydro bill changes. Keep in touch. James |
